LUNG HEALTH: REDUCING THE INCIDENCE OF OCCUPATIONAL LUNG DISEASE

Occupational lung diseases occur as a result of repeated and long-term exposure to air particulates and irritants.  Some occupations are more at risk for development of these diseases because of the nature and environment of the workplace or jobsite.  Many lung diseases are preventable as long as they are recognized early.  However, chronic lung problems can develop if the signs and symptoms are not diagnosed and treated early.  According to the Canadian Lung Association, the economic burden of respiratory disease in Canada is approximately 3 billion dollars.  While certain conditions such as pneumoconiosis have declined in the last 30 years, others such as occupational asthma have increased. Early Detection and Diagnosis: Symptoms of occupational lung disease include: Many of these symptoms resemble other medical conditions which is why accurate diagnosis is important.  Dysfunction can be initially identified through pulmonary function tests, such as spirometry, to measure the lungs ability to exchange gases such as oxygen.  Once dysfunction is identified through spirometry, a client should seek the care of a physician for more accurate diagnosis.  The physician often will send the client to have a chest x-ray to determine how much damage has occurred to the lungs. NEW LUNG CANCER THERAPY FIGHTS DEADLY DISEASE

A new oral prescription medication that is being studied in an international clinical trial now it Phase III may be a successful alternative to chemotherapy, according to news results. The trial was developed and studied by scientists at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center and studied approximately 1,466 patients suffering from lung cancer in 24 various countries worldwide. Patients participated in receiving randomized treatments of Iressa, a once-daily tablet, or docetaxel, which is a form of chemotherapy. Those receiving chemotherapy had a combined median survival rate of 8 months with 34 percent having a one-year survival rate. Similarly, patients given the Iressa treatment had an overall survival rate of 7.6 months with a 32 percent survival rate of one year. However, while Iressa appears to be on par with the chemotherapy treatment, scientists found that lung cancer patients who suffered from tumors with EGFR gene mutations and who were given Iressa had "an improved response rate and progression-free survival compared to docetaxel," according to researchers of the study who spoke with Science Daily. Iressa is a considered a "biological oral therapy" and, according to the researchers from the news article, "this is the largest study in lung cancer comparing an oral biologic ...

WHO ELSE WANT TO GET CURED OF CANCER AND VIRTUALLY ANY DISEASE

Cancer has always been a part of the diseases of mankind. For centuries, people spoke of it only in whispers, or not at all. They act as if the disease is dreadful and shameful as well. Today, thanks to advanced clinical research, cancer cures are readily available. But in context, the picture is not as bleak as it might seem. At the beginning of the twentieth century, survival from cancer was relatively rare. At the end of the 1930's, the five-year survival rate (alive after five years) was one in five or fewer. Ten years later it had shot up to one in four, and in the mid-fifties to one in three. This figure has remained relatively stable because the survival rate for some of the more widespread cancers has leveled off despite the best efforts of physicians to devise better forms of treatment. For such cancers, which include those of the breast, colon, and rectum, improvements will come through earlier detection and even prevention. In the war against cancer, considerable progress is being made on many fronts. It ranges from advances in early detection to breakthroughs in treatment. Although cancer is most common in people over 50, it can ...
