ASBESTOSIS LUNG CANCER AND MESOTHELIOMA RATES AS A RESULT OF OCCUPATIONAL ASBESTOS EXPOSURE
As many are already aware, asbestos exposure has been linked to a number of life threatening diseases. Most exposure related illnesses result from the inhalation of tiny asbestos particles or fibers. One interesting study that examined the rate of disease in miners is called, "Relation between asbestosis and bronchial cancer in amphibole asbestos miners" by G K Sluis-Cremer, B N Bezuidenhout - Br J Ind Med 1989;46:537-540 - Epidemiology Research Unit, Medical Bureau of Occupational Disease, Johannesburg, Republic of South Africa. Here is an excerpt: "Abstract - In a necropsy series of 339 amphibole asbestos miners heavy smoking, age, and the presence of asbestosis were significantly associated with the presence of bronchial cancer. Of the 35 cases of bronchial cancer, 24 were associated with asbestosis. Eleven cases of bronchial cancer occurred in men without asbestosis; all were smokers. Standardised proportional mortality rates indicated no excess of bronchial cancer in 302 exposed men without asbestosis whereas these rates were progressively raised in men with slight or moderate/severe asbestosis. Of the four exposure variables introduced separately into a logistic regression model, "years of exposure" made a small but significant contribution; "residence time" marginally failed to achieve a 5% level of significance. Two ...
MESOTHELIOMA LUNG CANCER REMAINS A CHALLENGE FOR DOCTORS
Mesothelioma Lung Cancer is not very easy for doctors to diagnose. Though humankind has witnessed incredible advances in medical diagnosis technologies and methodologies, mesothelioma continues to stay a challenge for doctors. Thus, not every doctor can treat this disease. It calls for the service of a special set of doctors who are trained to handle mesothelioma cases.
Being a complicated disease, mesothelioma requires many differing types of treatment. Seeking the assistance of specialized doctors, each trained in precise fields or treatment, is the very best means Mesothelioma Treatment Options. Since there are various kinds of mesothelioma that affect different body parts, it is best if the disease is treated with a team. To start with, even before a patient is referred to the consultant team, the onus of suspecting the symptoms as related to cancer,eg mesothelioma, lies with the general practitioner.
Once the general practitioner refers the patient, the specialized team decides the future course of action. The 1st specialist in the team is a pulmonologist who is specifically trained to diagnose and treat conditions as well as diseases that are related to lung anomalies. This expert can competently handle cases of Mesothelioma Lung Cancer, lung cancer, bronchitis, asthma, emphysema, ...
THE LETHAL CANCER KNOWN AS MESOTHELIOMA AND CHRONIC EXPOSURE TO ASBESTOS
Mesothelioma is a lethal cancer that can attack the membranes surrounding the heart, lung, and stomach. One interesting article that examines asbestos exposure in vitro is called, "Human Alveolar Macrophage Cytokine Release in Response to in Vitro and in Vivo Asbestos Exposure" by Raymond C. Perkins, Ronald K. Scheule1, Raymond Hamilton, Glen Gomes, Gary Freidman and Andrij Holian - Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, Departments of Internal Medicine and Pharmacology, University of Texas Medical School at Houston and Environmental and Occupational Research Center, Houston, TX. Experimental Lung Research - 1993, Vol. 19, No. 1, Pages 55-65 - Here is an excerpt: "The lung macrophage is proposed to be involved in the development of asbestos-induced pulmonary fibrosis. Knowledge of the effects of long-term asbestos exposure on lung macrophage cytokine release should better define the role of the macrophage in fibrogenesis. This study examines the effects of acute in vitro asbestos exposure and chronic in vivo asbestos exposure on human alveolar macrophage cytokine release. As indicators of asbestos-induced macrophage activation, the cellular release of IL-1?, TNF-?, IL-6, GM-CSF, and PGE2 was mesaured during a 24-h in vitro culture. Alveolar macrophages from normal volunteers were cultured in vitro with chrysotile asbestos. ...
MESOTHELIOMA LUNG CANCER -WHAT ARE THE EARLY AND LATE SYMPTOMS?
Mesothelioma is a cancer that is caused by exposure to asbestos. Malignant cells develop in the protective lining that covers the body's internal organs called the mesothelium. The most common site that mesothelioma affects is the outer lining of the lungs and chest cavity, called the pleura. It can also occur in the abdominal cavity and the pericardium which is the sac that surrounds the heart, occasionally it also attacks the lining of the testis called the tunica vaginalis. Most often people that have worked in asbestos related companies are at serious risk of developing the cancer. However the relatives of these workers can also develop the cancer especially if they come in contact and handle the working clothes of these workers. For example, a housewife who washes clothes of someone who works with asbestos can be exposed . Exposure to asbestos cement products can also occur when you are doing renovation works in your house.Unfortunately the symptoms of mesothelioma can take 20 to 50 years to appear. Accumulation of fluid in the pleural space will lead to shortness of breath, coughing, and chest pains. This type of mesothelioma is called pleural mesothelioma. Abdominal mesothelioma presents with symptoms like weight loss, abdominal ...

The peritoneal form of this is basic relatively uncommon type of a cancer that also accounts less than quarter of the cases. Pericardial mesothelioma is also the rarest type of the three forms. There are also several techniques which also can prove useful if its basic is suspected on to the presence of the pleural effusion that are combined with basic a history of occupational or secondary asbestos exposure. It does not usually spread to the bone, brain, or adrenal glands. Moreover, this are not as sensitive to radiation therapy or chemotherapy as are many other tumors. Many thousands cases are now diagnosed in United States each and each year. History of the exposure to the asbestos may Treatment options for management of the malignant its include also surgery, chemotherapy also radiation and also the most treatment. The only known cause of this cancer is asbestos.
Symptoms of the peritoneal. It`s includes abdominal pain and weakness also the lose of weight loss of the appetite also nausea and also abdominal swelling. The most common form of it is pleural. Sometimes it is hard to tell the difference between malignant and lung cancer. Asbestos exposure ...
MESOTHELIOMA CANCER AND ASBESTOS
Many people have never heard of mesothelioma cancer because it is rare. According to the National Cancer Institute, about 2,000 new cases are diagnosed in the United States each year. Compare that to 213,380 lung cancer cases the Institute predicts will be diagnosed in 2007.
Mesothelioma cancer begins in the tissue, called the mesothelieum, that surrounds the lungs, stomach, heart and other organs. The mesothelieum protects these organs with two levels of tissue and a fluid that allows the organs to move. It can be found in the area around any of these organs but is most commonly found in the chest and abdomen area.
Contact with asbestos is the main risk factor. Asbestos can be found in insulation in many buildings. Asbestos can also be found in floor tiles, roofing, dust and rocks.
Most of the use of asbestos in construction products was discontinued after 1989. But the cancer may not be diagnosed until 20 to 50 years after exposure because it takes a long time to develop.
That is why most cases of occur in people in their late 50s and older. According to the American Cancer Society, three-fourths of patients diagnosed are over 65.
Other factors that have been tied ...
MESOTHELIOMA LUNG CANCER AND ITS TREATMENTS – CAN A CURE BE FAR BEHIND?
Mesothelioma is a form of cancer that affects the lining of the abdomen or the chest. Malignant cells appear in the mesothelium, the sac that acts as protective cover for many of the internal organs in the body. A mesothelium is made of two cell layers - one that directly covers the organ and another that surrounds it. If it covers the organs located in the abdominal cavity, it is called the peritoneum. The mesothelium that provides protection for the heart is called the pericardium. If it covers the lungs and wall lining of the chest, it is called pleura. It is not the same as lung cancer. This disease can affect both men and women and can appear at any age.The risk of developing mesothelioma is increased due to exposure to asbestos. In fact, at least 70% of mesothelioma cases showed individuals with a history of exposure to the material. It can also affect people who are living with a person who has been exposed to asbestos. It is also known to appear in other patients even if they have not had prior exposure. Some of the symptoms that merit a visit to the doctor include: difficulty in breathing, chest ...
